Katerina Siniakova of Czech Republic defeated Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark to win the Swedish tennis open. This was her second WTA title. The 21-year-old adds to her maiden success in Shenzhen earlier in 2017 and climbed to world number 39.

Former Union Minister and senior Congress leader Santosh Mohan Dev passed away in Silchar, Assam, after developing pneumonia. He was 83. Dev, a seven-time Congress MP, was first elected to the Lok Sabha in 1980. He represented Silchar five times and Tripura twice.

Turkey and its main regional ally Qatar launched military exercises in the emirate that will involve some 250 Turkish troops and 30 armored vehicles. The exercises would initially involve ground forces, with naval forces joining later. An observation day involving top commanders would take place on August 7-8, 2017.

India and Bhutan mutually decided to bring into force the 'new' bilateral Agreement on Trade, Commerce and Transit with effect from July 29, 2017. The agreement provides for a free trade regime between the territories of India and Bhutan. The agreement also provides for duty-free transit of Bhutanese merchandise for trade with third countries.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a corpus of Rs 100 crore to study and find a permanent solution to the flood problem in the northeastern states. In this regard, PM Modi also announced setting up a high- powered committee and a research project to study Brahmaputra River and its role in creating devastating flood.

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has constituted a Committee to study and identify key data protection issues and recommend methods for addressing them. The Committee of Experts headed by Justice BN Srikrishna, former Judge of Supreme Court, will also suggest a draft Data Protection Bill for data protection, which is expected to provide big boost to Digital economy of the country.

Jharkhand Cabinet approved Religious Freedom Bill 2017 in which, as given in Section (3), forceful or allurement induced religious conversion will be a non-bailable criminal offence. In the event of violation of Section (3), there will be up to three years imprisonment or Rs 50,000 penalty or both. If the crime involved a minor, woman or person from SC or ST community then the prison term would be up to four years and a penalty of one lakh rupees.

Ustad Hussain Sayeeduddin Dagar, one of the foremost exponents of the Dhrupad tradition, died in Pune following prolonged illness. He was 78. He was the youngest of the famous seven ‘Dagar Bandhus’ and had dedicated his life to keeping the Dhrupad tradition alive. Known to his admirers as ‘Sayeed Bhaai’, he was born in Alwar in Rajasthan and was part of the illustrious Dagar family of musicians.

The US Senate confirmed Christopher Wray as the new Director of Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). He succeeded James Comey, who was fired by US President Donald Trump amid the investigation into Russian meddling in 2016 presidential election. He is a former high-ranking official in President George W. Bush's Justice Department who oversaw investigations into corporate fraud.
